da Vinci Robotics
When it comes to technology, WakeMed is on the cutting edge. We proudly use the latest in surgical equipment – namely, the da Vinci Surgical System.
What is the da Vinci Surgical System?
The da Vinci Surgicial System is a cutting-edge technology that provides patients with several new, minimally invasive surgical options. These surgeries are performed with the assistance of robotics and are available to treat various conditions, such as heart disease, prostate cancer and gynecologic problems.
The da Vinci Surgical System consists of:
- A surgeon console that allows for more precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient;
- A cart with four robotic arms that execute the surgeon’s commands;
- An “EndoWrist,” which has a full range of instruments and is designed with seven degrees of motion that mimic the dexterity of the human hand and wrist; and
- Image processing equipment that provides 3-D images of the operative field through high-intensity lighting and camera-control units.
What are the benefits of the da Vinci?
The da Vinci Surgical System offers significant advantages over traditional "open" surgeries. For surgeons, the benefits include the ability to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions - usually 1 to 2 centimeters - with unmatched precision. The da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon; therefore, it cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. The da Vinci enhances the surgeon's control and range of motion, improves visualization through 3-D technology and offers ergonomic comfort during the surgical procedure.
Meanwhile, patients who undergo procedures performed with the da Vinci Surgical System experience less blood loss and scarring, a shorter recovery time with a faster return to normal daily activities and, in many cases, better clinical outcomes following surgery. Other benefits include:
- Significantly less pain
- Reduced trauma to the body
- Reduced need for transfusions
- Less post-operative pain and discomfort
- Less risk of infection
- Shorter hospital stay
What types of surgeries can be performed using the da Vinci?
To date, da Vinci has been used in everything from minimally invasive heart surgery to minimally invasive cancer surgery, to treat conditions as diverse as prostate cancer, endometrial cancer, morbid obesity and mitral valve regurgitation.
In short, the da Vinci Surgical System combines robotics and surgical technology as never before, enabling your surgeon to provide the most effective and least invasive treatment option available for a wide range of complex conditions.
