New Clinical Chemistry and Hematology Panel

Date: August 11, 2004

NEW UPDATE - CLINICAL CHEMISTRY AND HEMATOLOGY PANEL

Several changes in the menu of test panels offered by the WakeMed Pathology Laboratories will occur on September 1, 2004.  These changes are part of an effort to standardize the terminology and components of our test panels and to bring them into accordance with AMA Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).  We expect this to result in more efficient test ordering.

One significant change is the discontinuation of the Chem7 panel.  A newly created Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) will be offered instead.  A BMP consists of the seven tests included in a Chem7 plus a total calcium.  Orders for the single test “calcium” will henceforth be interpreted as a request for a total calcium measurement.  Ionized calcium measurement will be obtainable by ordering “ionized calcium.”  Another new panel, the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), has also been created.

The Automated Blood Count (ABC) and the Complete Blood Count (CBC) panels will undergo name changes.  The current ABC panel will be termed “CBC,” and the current CBC panel will be termed “CBC with differential.”

Some other panels have merely undergone name changes without alteration of their components.  Please see the following chart  for a summary of all of the changes.
