Nurse Extern Applicants
WakeMed will post positions and receive applications for the WakeMed Nurse Externship Program from December through February each year.
The Nurse Externship Program is sponsored by the Nursing Education Department and is coordinated by a Nursing Resource Specialist with experience in Nurse Development.
As a WakeMed Nurse Extern, you will:

Develop technical skills in delivering patient care

Develop critical thinking skills
-
Demonstrate competence in theory application
-
Collaborate as a participating partner with members of the health care team

Partner with Registered Nurse preceptors in a supportive, nurturing environment

Minimize “reality shock”
Program Overview
-
A Nurse Extern Orientation Program during the first week of employment
-
A Welcome Reception
-
Rotate through different departments on different days of the week and during varying shifts

Be assigned to a Registered Nurse Preceptor
-
Attend two continuing education days
-
Work a schedule of 36 to 40 hours per week for a 10 week period from the end of May to the end of July
Requirements

Applicant must be a rising senior in an accredited nursing program.

Applicant must be listed as a NAII with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Applicant must have a strong desire to learn.
