The Volunteers at WakeMed Raleigh Campus

I recently completed a "President's Survey" for the NC Hospital Volunteers. When it was done, I was so proud to see our accomplishments in black and white, that I wanted to share this information with you.

As you know, we sponsor several fundraisers at the hospital during the course of the year. Many of you have spent hours showing jewelry, helping with uniforms, and linens, even pots and pans and books and $5 trinkets. We eventually learn how much our organization earns from the sales and are pleased. What we may not be aware of is just how these profits are used to help our patients and our hospital. During the last year, we were able to make contributions totaling $41,311.

Funds Donated by the Volunteers at WakeMed Raleigh Campus, May 2005 - May 2006

Foundation (Family Waiting Room Pledge): $20,000
Society of 1961 (Pediatric Transport Vehicle): $5,000
Kids Day: $2,000
Toiletries (For basic personal care items for patients who are unable to provide their own on admission): $3,609 Reach Out And Read (Books to Pediatric Clinic patients and siblings): $3,370 Pediatrics: $2,202
Baby Packets (Baby clothes, diapers etc. for newborns whose parents are unable to provide): $1,835
Children's Emergency Dept.: $1,481
Infant Care Clinic: $810
"Hypo Boxes" (For newly diagnosed children with diabetes who are being taught how to manage/avoid hypoglycemic reactions): $186
ICN (Meals for parents during support group meetings): $818

TOTAL: $41,311

Isn't it amazing how much of a difference we make? This breakdown doesn't even put a dollar value on all the lovingly hand crafted knit and crocheted items made by our sewers. Hundreds of dolls, lap robes, booties, infant clothing, Huggables and other items are made by Volunteers, distributed to our patients by Volunteers, and appreciated by patients and their families every day.

From October 1 through March 31, our Volunteers donated 28,062 hours of service. While the value of these hours of service is truly priceless, they represent a 27 full time employee equivalent and $506,238 salary dollars!

Congratulations, and thank you for your time, your dedication to WakeMed and your support.
