WakeMed's Patricia J. Ness, RN, Honored by the NC Center for Nursing

ED Observation Unit Nurse Selected to Attend Institute for Nursing Excellence

RALEIGH, N.C. WakeMed Health & Hospitals is pleased to announce that Patricia J. Ness, RN, in the Raleigh Campus Emergency Department Observation Unit has been selected by the North Carolina Center for Nursing to attend a week-long Institute for Nursing Excellence. Ness is one of 25 nurses in North Carolina selected for the award and is being honored at the conference May 1-5 in Salter Path, N.C.

Emergency department nursing is fast-paced, challenging and overall a very difficult career due to the different acuity levels and diagnoses of our patients, explained Eric Reyer, manager, Emergency Department Observation Unit. It takes a very special person to fill the role of ED nurse with caring and compassion. Patricia exhibits all of the qualities an emergency department nurse needs to succeed, however, she goes one step further and truly excels.

Institute for Nursing Excellence award winners are selected through a blind scoring process and winners attend a one-week development program. The application is self-reported, but testimonies are required from managers, peers, and most importantly patients.

Ness stated in her application that her reasons for wanting to attend the Institute for Nursing Excellence include increasing her capacity for leadership, enhancing her ability to attract and retain new nurses to the field and collaborating and meeting with peers in the field.

She prides herself on being kind and understanding to patients that are often in difficult situations. Ness works hard to be a mentor to new nurses in the department and continuously hones her clinical knowledge to provide top-rate patient care.

Ness is certified by the Emergency Nurses Association, in Pediatric Advance Life Support, in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and in Basic Life Support. She is active in the community, serving as a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, and on the administrative board of the Parent Teacher Student Association. Ness has been a WakeMed employee since 1998.
