| SS Susceptible |
The microorganism is inhibited by levels of antimicrobial in the blood or tissue at usual dosage. |
| MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) |
The lowest concentration of a drug which will inhibit growth of a microorganism in vitro. A higher concentration than the MIC (at least 2 to 4 times higher) should be achieved at the site of infection for the drug to be effective. |
| MIC Breakpoints |
Established by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS); based on achievable serum levels in adults with normal renal function. |
| Susceptibility Data |
Susceptibility data is to be used as a guide and does not necessarily indicate the drug of choice for treatment. |
| Cephalosporins |
Cefazolin test results may not accurately predict susceptibility to other first generation cephalosporins. Second and third generation cephalosporins are not routinely reported when first generation are susceptible. |
