Microbiology Antimicrobials and Susceptibilities Information

2003

SS Susceptible The microorganism is inhibited by levels of antimicrobial in the blood or tissue at usual dosage.
MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) The lowest concentration of a drug which will inhibit growth of a microorganism in vitro.  A higher concentration than the MIC (at least 2 to 4 times higher) should be achieved at the site of infection for the drug to be effective.
MIC Breakpoints Established by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS); based on achievable serum levels in adults with normal renal function.
Susceptibility Data Susceptibility data is to be used as a guide and does not necessarily indicate the drug of choice for treatment.
Cephalosporins Cefazolin test results may not accurately predict susceptibility to other first generation cephalosporins.  Second and third generation cephalosporins are not routinely reported when first generation are susceptible.
