When it comes to matters of the heart, there’s nothing like experience. Wake County's first open heart surgery was performed at WakeMed nearly 40 years ago. Today, our heart program is the busiest in North Carolina, and we treat more heart patients than any other hospital in the state. This is important because national studies show conclusively that higher volume hospitals produce better results and a lower mortality rate. We bring valuable experience and experts to our patients, providing them with the best care possible.
WakeMed Heart Center: A World-Class Facility
Step into the WakeMed Heart Center and experience the utmost in convenience. The entire facility is designed to give patients and their families easy and comfortable access to the care they need. From the convenient parking deck adjacent to the building, to the ease of finding your way to patient registration, diagnostic testing, your physician's office or even the Heart Center Inn, our facility serves you without any added stress or anxiety.
In 2006, we completed a $30 million-plus expansion project of the WakeMed Heart Center. The project added 53,535 square feet of new space, renovated an existing 39,073 square feet and includes:
- Additional Invasive Cardiology space that houses eight cardiac catheterization labs, and two electro-physiology labs
- A pre- and post-procedure observation unit that doubled in size from 22 to 43 beds
- Relocated and expanded diagnostic testing departments
- An additional waiting area for families of catheterization patients
- Ten additional rooms and conference center space in the Heart Center Inn
