For Our Visitors
Visitors are welcome at WakeMed. We have compiled the following information for your convenience and to ensure that you have a pleasant experience while you are with us. If you have any questions or need more details, please call the hospital operator at 350-8000.
Patient Information
WakeMed telephone operators are happy to provide callers with the location of a patient and connect them to the appropriate destinations. However, operators are prohibited by HIPAA regulations from releasing any information regarding the patient's condition. Callers will need to gather condition information from the patient's family.
Please note: If you or your children have an acute illness with any of the following symptoms, please do not visit our patients:
- sore throat
- fever
- headache
- coughing, nasal drainage, or stuffy head
- generalized body aches
- diarrhea within the past 24 hours
- vomiting within the past 24 hours
Visiting Hours
Regular visiting hours for family and friends are from 11 am to 8 pm.
Raleigh Campus: The Visitor Entrance on the Raleigh campus is locked from 8 pm until 5 am. During these hours, visitors should use the Patient Registration entrance. Shuttle service is available from the Visitor Entrance and Patient Registration Entrance 24 hours a day. Please call ext. 8170 or 8171 if you would like an escort to the parking decks.
WakeMed Cary Hospital: The Main Entrance is locked from 8:30 pm to 6 am. If you would like a security escort to the parking lot, call extension 2000 from any hospital phone.
There may be variations in the general visiting hours policy, based on the patient’s condition and other situations on the unit. A patient may have up to two visitors at one time. It is best for children under 12 to stay with an adult in the Visitor Entrance Lobby. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult at all times. If there are special circumstances, children under 12 may visit with the permission of the nurse manager or the patient’s physician, as long as the children are healthy and are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Detailed information about the special visiting hours for the Critical Care Units and the Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace is available at the Information Desk in the Visitor Entrance Lobby and in the Family Waiting Room on the second floor (Raleigh campus). Intensive Care and Critical Care visiting hours are also posted inside each individual unit.
Parking
Raleigh Campus: Parking for visitors is available in the P1 (Green) Parking Deck at the front entrance of the hospital on New Bern Avenue. A small fee is charged for visitor parking. Family members of patients who are hospitalized for more than seven days can get a 50 percent discount for seven days of parking, or a total discount of $10 for 14 days. The discount is available through the Public Safety department and is limited to two vehicles. Call 350-8171 for details.
WakeMed Cary Hospital: Parking for visitors is in the parking lots in front of the hospital’s main entrance. There is no charge for parking.
Waiting Areas
For the comfort and convenience of visitors, there is a designated waiting area near each nursing unit. At the Raleigh Campus, the newly renovated second floor Critical Care Waiting Room (ext. 8296) is the waiting area for families of patients in CCU, CTSU, OR, PACU, MICU, SICU and NICU. The Day Surgery Center Waiting Room is on the second floor above Patient Registration. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, there is a special waiting room for the Intensive Care Unit.

Dining
On the Raleigh Campus, dining facilities are located in Café 3000 on the first floor of the hospital. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, guests may dine in the cafeteria on the ground floor.

Coffee Bar
A gourmet coffee bar, Leapin' Lizards Espresso, Inc., provides gourmet coffee and espresso drinks in the main lobby of WakeMed Raleigh Campus (Monday through Friday, 6 am to 8 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 7 am to 7 pm) and in the WakeMed Cary Hospital Coffee Corner located in the atrium (Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm to 5 pm). Products include fresh-brewed fair trade organic and shade-grown coffees selected and roasted by Larry's Beans of Raleigh, Island Oasis fruit smoothies, Italian sodas, made-to-order frozen coffee drinks, chais, hot chocolates, specialty espresso-based lattes and cappuccinos, and a selection of pastries and cookies. Whole beans are for sale, as well as travel mugs that can be used for coffee club refills.
Leapin' Lizards offers frequent buyer cards (free drink for every 10 purchases), value/gift cards and credit and debit card purchasing for "swipe and go" convenience.
Telephones
In-house telephone numbers are just four digits. For outside local calls, simply dial 9 + the local number. There is no charge for a local call. When making a long distance call on the Raleigh Campus, dial 9 + 0 + area code + number. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, dial 67 to access an outside long distance line. At both locations, an operator will come on the line before your call is completed. Please tell the operator whether you are making a collect call, or whether you would like the call to be billed to your home or to a credit card. Long distance calls cannot be billed to a patient’s room.
The Gift Shop
The Gift Shop on the Raleigh Campus is located near the Visitor Entrance. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, the Gift Shop is on the first floor near the Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace. The shops sell plants, flowers, and a large variety of gifts, magazines, toiletries and cards. The Raleigh Campus Gift Shop is open from 9 am to 8 pm on weekdays, and from 10 am to 7 pm on weekends. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, hours of operation are from 9:30 am to 7 pm on weekdays. On weekends, hours are from 11 am to 5 pm.
Gifts for Patients
Please check with the patient’s nurse before bringing gifts of food or drink. Also, check first with the nurses before bringing any gifts to the Critical Care Units.
Banking
There are two automated teller machines on the Raleigh Campus – one located in the Health Park, and the other just outside Patient Registration on the first floor. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, an ATM is available in the Atrium Lobby.
Chapel
On the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, WakeMed Spiritual Care hosts daily devotional services in the meditation chapel on the third floor. If you would like to talk privately with a chaplain, please call extension 8556 or dial 8000 and ask that a chaplain be paged. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, a meditation room is located on the first floor near the Intensive Care Unit.
