The Volunteers at WakeMed Raleigh Campus

What an amazing year we have had, and it's not over yet!

Medical Explorer Post #10 had another great year that ended in the April. Many thanks to advisors Marie Johnson and Brandon Costea.

We have about 70 college students giving their time to volunteer with us. Our Junior Volunteer Summer program recently ended as students prepared to begin another school year. Fourteen of these teens will be with us year round!

From October through July 2006, 544 individuals have contributed over 46,000 hours of service to WakeMed Raleigh Campus and associated locations!

We have recently added a new program of Hospital Tours to help acquaint us with areas of the hospital that we may not be familiar with in the course of our usual placement areas. Barbara Pappas is helping lead the monthly tours. The tours have recently been extended to include evening hours.

Our sales, which are our main fund raising events, have been very successful. We have sponsored jewelry sales, a book sale, a $5 sale, a T-Fal cookware sale, a linen sale and a uniform sale. Proceeds from all of these fundraisers are used to support the following areas of WakeMed Raleigh Campus:
* toiletries for immediate need patients
* pledge to the Foundation for the Critical Care Waiting Room reception area
* toys for the Childrens Emergency Department
* special events, toys, personal care needs for patients and families on the Pediatrics unit
* hypo packets for the Peds Diabetes program
* funding for books for the Reach Out & read Program in the Peds Clinics

* baby packet supplies for new moms and babies in need on day of discharge
* diversionary supplies for the Get Up & Go program in adult units

We have sponsored two successful American Red Cross Blood Drives resulting in 256 productive pints of blood for this region.

Our hospital will be represented at a statewide North Carolina Hospital Volunteer Conference in Greensboro in September.

Our patients are benefiting from a new program that will hopefully bring smiles and cheer to them. The Flower Shuttle is run by a group of volunteers from the Raleigh Moravian Church who accept donations of floral arrangements used at a variety of events. They reassemble the flowers into small arrangements that they then deliver to our hospital and other area organizations. Our volunteers then deliver these arrangements to our patients. Small flower containers or vases that you no longer use can be brought to the Volunteer office. The containers are then recycled for the next deliveries.

I hope you will be able to attend our Annual Fall Luncheon on Monday, Oct 9, at 11:30am at the North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh. It will be a fun occasion of fellowship, delicious food, and pride in the significant accomplishments of the past year. Please mark your calendars. I look forward to seeing you there.

Respectfully,

Rosemary Kenny
